Separate commercial and network questions

Telecom data careers can involve customer activity, distribution, revenue reporting or network performance. These areas share some tools but not the same definitions. Decide whether you want to explain subscriber behaviour, support commercial operations or investigate technical service quality before choosing portfolio work.

Read the responsibilities around each vacancy rather than treating telecom analytics as a synonym for churn modelling. A reporting post may emphasise spreadsheets and routine controls, whereas a network-facing position may need engineering knowledge that a generic data course does not provide.

Define activity before calculating retention

An active subscriber needs an explicit rule in your example: perhaps a qualifying usage event within a stated window. Changing that window changes the count. Write the rule before drawing a trend so you do not unconsciously choose a definition that creates a stronger story.

Do not equate SIMs, accounts and people. A synthetic customer can own more than one connection, while an analysis may only have connection-level identifiers. Describe the unit you can actually observe instead of presenting every active connection as a unique individual.

Construct three fictional connections with different usage dates and show how a seven-day window differs from a thirty-day window. This tiny worked example can communicate your reasoning better than a complicated dashboard whose active-base calculation is hidden inside an unexplained formula.

Use recharge cohorts carefully

Create synthetic recharge events with date, amount and connection identifier. Group connections by the week of their first observed recharge, then compare subsequent activity at equal ages. A newer cohort should not look worse simply because it has had less time to return.

Distinguish absence of observation from confirmed inactivity. If your dataset ends halfway through a cohort's second month, label that period incomplete. Filling the missing future with zeros would manufacture a retention decline that is really an artefact of your observation window.

Explain what recharge behaviour cannot establish. A payment is not necessarily immediate consumption, and a period without recharge does not reveal the person's reason. Suggest what additional approved data would help, while avoiding unsupported claims about dissatisfaction, affordability or a competitor's marketing campaign.

Read network measures with their denominators

A network exercise might compare failed connection attempts across fictional areas and hours. Show both the number of failures and the number of attempts. An area with more failures can still have a lower failure rate if it carries much more traffic.

Aggregate rates using their underlying counts rather than averaging percentages without weights. For example, a quiet hour and a busy hour should not automatically contribute equally to a daily measure. Explain the arithmetic using a small table a nontechnical reader can verify.

Avoid treating an area-level network measure as an individual customer's experience. Coverage, device characteristics and observation methods may complicate interpretation. Frame your result as an investigative lead and name the technical evidence an engineering colleague would need before recommending a network intervention.

Design a restrained retention experiment

If a synthetic analysis identifies a falling-activity group, propose a test rather than declaring that a discount will solve the problem. Specify eligibility, a comparison group, an observation period and a business outcome that includes cost, not just message response.

Consider whether an apparent improvement merely shifts the timing of an existing purchase. A short spike in recharge activity may not represent sustained additional value. Choose a follow-up period long enough to examine displacement and clearly label any assumptions about margin or offer cost.

Discuss consent and contact eligibility as requirements for an operational campaign, not optional finishing touches. A portfolio should not include phone numbers or real call records. Use invented identifiers and demonstrate how exclusion rules would operate without attempting to contact actual subscribers.

Present a telecom-specific application

Lead your application with the analysis most relevant to the advertised function. For commercial reporting, foreground consistent subscriber definitions and cohort logic. For a technically oriented role, show the required foundation honestly rather than disguising a marketing dashboard as evidence of network engineering competence.

Prepare a short explanation of one misleading metric you corrected. You might describe why an unweighted average exaggerated improvement or why incomplete cohorts appeared to underperform. The explanation should connect your technical choice to a decision that would otherwise have been mistaken.

Ask how commercial, finance and technical teams resolve conflicting figures. Clarify the cadence of reporting and whether analysts can inspect source definitions. A useful first role provides context and feedback; the most impressive title is not necessarily the best place to learn reliable telecom analysis.
